If you're buying in store, try the helmet on before committing. It should sit squarely on your head with the top of the eye port just above your eyebrows, feel snug with no pressure points, and not shift or rock when you move your head. A new helmet will loosen slightly as the liner breaks in, so snug is good — tight is not.

Consider the type of riding you'll be doing and choose a helmet style that suits your needs. Full-face helmets offer the most protection and are ideal for street riding and racing. Open-face helmets provide less coverage but offer better visibility and ventilation, making them popular for cruising and touring. Motocross helmets feature a unique design with a visor and chin bar, providing maximum protection for off-road riding.

Set a budget for your helmet purchase and choose a model that offers the best combination of safety, comfort, and features within your price range. Remember, investing in a quality helmet is a small price to pay for your safety and peace of mind on the road or trail.

A helmet isn't a lifetime investment. Most manufacturers recommend replacing your helmet every three to five years, even if it looks fine — the foam liner degrades over time from sweat, UV exposure, and general wear, reducing its ability to absorb impact.

More importantly, replace your helmet immediately after any significant impact, even if there's no visible damage. The EPS foam inside a helmet is designed to compress and absorb energy in a crash — once it's done that job, it won't perform the same way again.
