Please note, depending on the OEM requirements of your motorcycle, it may call for either a Bias or Radial tire. If you have any questions, or would like to speak to a Driven Team member about your bike and tire requirements, do not hesitate to reach out!
The outside casing of a radial tire has a layer of rubber-coated steel belts. This layer is the "tread". A second layer of a radial tire is made up of "plies" which consists of rubber-coated steel embedded into the rubber. The direction plies point makes a huge difference.
Radial plies start at the centre and run radially from bead to bead around entire tire. Radial tires do well gripping the road and provide improved durability and maneuverability. The thick shoulder of the radial tire protects the interior from shocks and damage. They are stable tires with less vibration, and generate less heat. Generally radial tires are denoted by a "Z" or "ZR" and are a very common tire for street and sport bikes or 6, 8 and 10 ply ATV/UTV tires with trail applications.
When building a Bias Ply Tire, reinforcing cords are laid diagonally across the tire. (Usually, 30° - 40° from the direction of travel.) Each additional ply has the cords laid at an opposing angle. This creates a criss-cross pattern. Finally, more rubber is applied over the plies to create the tread.
Most bias ply tires are 4 ply, meaning they have 4 layers of reinforcing fabric cords. More layers makes for a stronger tire. 6 ply, 8 ply, and even 10 ply tires are available for heavier vehicles. Bias tires will generally be denoted by a "B".
1WIDTH of tire is your first number. In the above photo, the width of the tire is denoted as 120 (millimeter). This means that your tire from sidewall to sidewall would measure 120mm
2The ASPECT RATIO of your tire (second number) is denoted as a percentage of your width (70% of your 120mm width)
3It is common to have a B, Z or ZR after your aspect ratio. This describes the build/construction of the tire. B is Bias, R is Radial and ZR would describe a performance street tire ('Z' or sometimes 'V' denoting speed rating).
4Motorcycle (and ATV/UTV) RIMS are measured in inches. In this case, the size of the rim is 17 inches diameter. Motorcycle/dirtbike rims generally range from 10 inches to 21 inches. ATV/UTV generally range 6 inches up to 18 inches or more in extreme circumstances
5SPEED RATING & LOAD INDEX is your final number. The top speed of tire is given a LETTER VALUE and max weight of tire is given a NUMERIC VALUE. For a full list of WEIGHT and SPEED breakdowns, please see below list
